Web Domain Suffixes To Be Increased
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) has voted to allow the creation of new web domain suffixes in a move that could hugely change the internet world.
Currenlty there are 22 top level domain suffixes along with around 250 country level domains such as .uk or .de.
However, starting next year Icann will begin to take applications for new suffixes, with cities and brands expected to be among the first to bid. The suffixes can be any word and be in any language, so .london, .coke, .google and .facebook probably aren’t that far away.
Applying for the suffixes is not cheap, with it expected to cost $185,000 ($114,000) and all applicants will have to prove they have legitimate claim to the name that they want, however this is thought to be a cost large corporations are willing to take in an attempt to maximise their online brand awareness.
Applications will be taken from January, so keep an eye out for new and exciting web addresses popping up.
