Case study · Specialist e-commerce
A product-first WooCommerce store for LawMate UK
The exclusive UK distributor of LawMate surveillance equipment needed a store that presents a specialist catalogue with the clarity of a high-end brochure — and that its own team can run without calling a developer.
- 8 Product categories From body-worn cameras to counter surveillance
- 3 Dedicated customer journeys Direct buyers, mystery shoppers and trade resellers
- Bespoke Block-based theme Custom Gutenberg blocks, no page builder
- In-house Content control Products, pages and guides updated by the client
A specialist catalogue for a professional audience
LawMate UK supplies specialist covert cameras and counter-surveillance technology to professional users across a range of industries. Its customers include private investigators, security professionals, policing, military organisations, television production teams and mystery shopping companies — people who know exactly what they need the equipment to do, and who expect the supplier to know it too.
The LawMate range continues to evolve as new products and technologies emerge, so the website could not be a one-off snapshot of the current catalogue. It needed to be built as a long-term platform: one that presents a select product range with the clarity and authority of a high-end product brochure, and that can absorb new categories and campaigns without a redesign.
We developed a modern WordPress and WooCommerce website that places products and photography at the centre of the experience. Combining a clean, minimal visual direction with a flexible content framework, the finished platform gives LawMate UK a strong digital foundation for product sales, trade opportunities and future catalogue growth.
The website
Editorial, product-led, and calm to browse
Large imagery, confident typography and generous spacing let each product stand on its own while keeping the wider catalogue easy to explore.
Creating a brochure-led e-commerce experience
Most e-commerce templates are built for volume: dense grids, competing badges, a sale banner on every surface. That is the wrong register for a premium specialist range where individual products have detailed capabilities and are selected for professional use.
Instead, the store is designed to feel editorial. Large, high-quality product imagery, confident typography and generous spacing allow each product to stand on its own while making the wider catalogue easier to explore. The result establishes clear pathways for mystery shoppers, resellers and first-time buyers without cluttering the experience for any of them.
A design shaped by close collaboration
LawMate UK came to the project with a clear sense of how its products and brand should be presented. Our role was to take that direction and translate it into a polished, consistent and commercially effective website.
The design developed through close collaboration with the client, with careful attention paid to layout, product photography, content hierarchy and the way individual products and their supporting information are presented. Working directly with the client throughout meant the finished site feels aligned with the LawMate UK brand, while giving each audience a clearer route towards the information and products most relevant to them.
Supporting specialist customer journeys
A general-purpose shop treats every visitor the same. LawMate UK serves several distinct professional audiences, and the site is structured to recognise that.
Audience routes
Three audiences, three clear paths
Dedicated journeys serve both direct and trade customers without compromising the simplicity of the wider website.
- Mystery shoppers — LawMate UK has long supported professional mystery shoppers, so the site includes dedicated guidance on suitable products, key considerations and the value of reliable equipment
- Resellers — a dedicated reseller area gives prospective trade partners a clear route to learn about authorised reseller opportunities, access product information and begin a conversation with the business
- Direct buyers — a streamlined catalogue, basket and checkout journey for professionals who already know what they need
WordPress and Gutenberg for greater client control
The website was developed in WordPress using Gutenberg and a modern block-based approach — no third-party page builder, no proprietary lock-in.
A key objective was to give the LawMate UK team maximum control over their website content without requiring them to work within an overly complex or restrictive system. Gutenberg provides a familiar, flexible editing experience while keeping content within a safe, structured framework: the client has meaningful control over the site, while the underlying design system protects brand consistency and page quality.
Client control
What the LawMate UK team can now do themselves
- Update product and editorial content independently
- Create new landing pages and campaign pages
- Maintain consistent layouts through reusable blocks
- Add new product categories as the range evolves
- Publish guides, product information and business updates
- Manage content within a structured, user-friendly editing system
- Reduce reliance on developers for routine website changes
WooCommerce for a product-first website
WooCommerce provides the e-commerce functionality behind the LawMate UK website — product management, categories, basket functionality and secure purchasing — with a fully customised front end on top.
The focus was placed on visual presentation, product storytelling and a calm browsing experience. Product pages showcase large imagery alongside the information customers need: specifications, features, supporting documentation and related products. This approach is particularly valuable for a specialist catalogue, where each item needs the space to be understood properly rather than reduced to a thumbnail and a price.
Scope
What the build covers
Supporting long-term growth
The LawMate UK website demonstrates how an e-commerce platform can be designed around presentation, flexibility and long-term business needs rather than around whichever theme was cheapest that week.
By combining WordPress, Gutenberg and WooCommerce with a fully customised front-end design, we created a platform that is practical to manage, adaptable for future growth and appropriate for a premium specialist product range. LawMate UK can now showcase its surveillance and counter-surveillance equipment with greater clarity and flexibility, and continues to evolve its online presence as the product range develops.
Selling something specialist?
Off-the-shelf shop templates are built for volume, not for products that need explaining. We build WooCommerce stores around how your customers actually buy — and hand you the keys when we are done. No jargon, no lock-in contracts.
